Munich Electrification unveils chip-based battery disconnect system for commercial EVs

At the IAA Transportation in Hanover, Munich Electrification has presented a new high-voltage disconnect device designed for commercial vehicle battery systems. The technology replaces conventional mechanical or pyrotechnic fuses with a chip-driven circuit, offering a more sophisticated approach to safety and control.
Instead of relying on physical destruction or pyrotechnic charges to break the circuit, the Munich-based company’s solution uses semiconductor technology. This allows for faster, more precise, and reusable disconnection, potentially enhancing the safety and reliability of electric commercial vehicles.
The unveiling at one of the industry’s largest trade fairs highlights the growing focus on advanced battery management and protection systems as electrification spreads to heavy-duty transport. The chip-based interrupter could lead to weight savings, reduced maintenance, and improved integration with vehicle electronics.
While the company did not specify a market launch timeline, the technology signals a shift towards more intelligent power distribution in next-generation electric trucks and buses.
