We often think of internal combustion engines as the primary source of urban air pollution. But in the most polluted cities, advanced catalytic converters and precise fuel management mean the exhaust from many modern cars is actually cleaner than the ambient air they draw in. The engine acts as a miniature air purifier, not a poisoner.

This reality is often overlooked in the rush to electrify everything. While EVs offer zero tailpipe emissions, today’s gasoline and hybrid vehicles have made remarkable progress. In smog-choked areas, simply driving a well-maintained, modern car already contributes less to local particulate and NOx problems than the environmental background levels.

That’s not to say combustion engines are perfect — CO2 and other greenhouse gases remain. But understanding the full picture helps policymakers and consumers make smarter choices. The next time you see a tailpipe, remember it may be doing more good than the surrounding air quality suggests.
