LG Energy Solution's Michigan Plant Begins Cell Production for EVs and Grid Storage

LG Energy Solution has officially commenced manufacturing operations at its expansive 226-acre facility in Lansing, Michigan. The new plant is dedicated to producing large-format battery cells, serving both the electric vehicle market and stationary energy storage systems. Once fully operational, the site is expected to achieve an annual production capacity of 35 GWh.

A key focus of the Lansing plant is the production of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells, primarily intended for grid-scale energy storage applications. LFP chemistry is favored for its stability, long cycle life, and cost-effectiveness, making it an ideal choice for stationary storage, while also gaining traction in certain EV segments.

This strategic expansion strengthens LG Energy Solution’s presence in the North American market, aligning with the growing demand for domestic battery manufacturing. The facility is poised to play a pivotal role in supporting the transition to cleaner energy and transportation, with operations set to scale up progressively.
