Leapmotor's Cheapest EV Yet Cleared for Australian Roads

Leapmotor has received the green light to sell its most budget-friendly electric hatchback in Australia, with approval documents confirming the B03 for the local market. In China, the model starts at a price that converts to roughly A$13,600, positioning it as a serious contender in the growing affordable EV segment.

Buyers will be able to choose between two battery sizes: a 39.8 kWh unit and a larger 53 kWh pack. Both are expected to use LFP chemistry, delivering a claimed 405-510 km under China’s CLTC test cycle — which should translate to somewhere in the 300-400 km range on the stricter WLTP standard. The car measures just under 4.2 metres in length, with kerb weights of 1,400 kg and 1,500 kg depending on the battery fitted.

Two front-mounted motor options are listed: one producing 130 kW and a more powerful 145 kW variant. Neither configuration supports towing, and ground clearance sits at 140 mm — marginally higher than the BYD Dolphin. Leapmotor already offers the C10, B10 and B05 in Australia and has signalled plans to broaden its local line-up. Exact specifications, release timing and pricing are expected to be confirmed closer to launch.
