Inovance and Innoscience Pack OBC and DC-DC Converter Into One GaN Unit

Two power-electronics suppliers have joined forces to squeeze an onboard charger and a DC-DC converter into a single gallium nitride-based package. Inovance Automotive and Innoscience say the combined design leans on GaN technology to raise power density while shrinking the overall footprint compared with separate silicon-based units.

Bringing the two functions together is a familiar goal for EV engineers: fewer discrete components, less wiring and lower weight inside the vehicle. By moving to GaN switching devices, the partners aim to run at higher frequencies, which in turn allows smaller passive components around them.

Details on production timing and which vehicle programs will adopt the two-in-one system have not been released. The announcement follows a broader push across the EV supply chain toward wide-bandgap semiconductors, as manufacturers look for efficiency gains that conventional silicon struggles to deliver.
