GM Energy and PG&E Bundle Home Charger Incentives for Managed EV Charging

GM Energy and PG&E Bundle Home Charger Incentives for Managed EV Charging

Pacific Gas and Electric has teamed up with GM Energy to roll out a combined incentive package aimed at California drivers who bring home a new battery-electric vehicle from one of General Motors’ brands. Under the arrangement, customers who either purchase or lease a fresh Chevrolet, GMC or Cadillac model and enroll in a managed charging scheme can qualify for discounted home charging hardware.

The centerpiece of the offer, branded the Smart Charge Bundle, gives participants a choice between two GM Energy home units: the PowerShift or the PowerUp 2 charger. The bundle can be arranged through dealerships that have signed on to the program, meaning buyers can walk out of the showroom having already sorted both their vehicle and their charging setup in one visit rather than coordinating separately with an electric utility and a hardware vendor.

Managed charging, sometimes called smart charging, lets a utility nudge the timing of a vehicle’s charging session toward hours when the grid is under less strain, often aligning with cheaper off-peak electricity rates. For PG&E, which serves a sprawling territory across northern and central California, enrolling EV owners in such programs helps absorb rising electricity demand from transportation without building out as much new peak capacity.

For GM Energy, the tie-up is another step in its push to sell more than just cars — the automaker has been steadily expanding its home energy business, offering stationary storage, chargers and related services alongside its vehicle lineup. Utilities and automakers have increasingly paired up on similar packages in recent years, betting that bundling charger rebates with vehicle sales will persuade more drivers to plug in at home under utility-friendly schedules.

The incentive package is available at participating dealerships, though specific dollar amounts and program details were not disclosed in the announcement. Interested PG&E customers should check with their local dealer or the utility for eligibility terms before signing.
