Global EV Sales Hit 27% Share in July as BEVs Surge, PHEVs Struggle

July proved to be a mixed month for the global auto market’s electrification efforts. New data shows that plugin vehicle registrations reached roughly 1.8 million units worldwide, a 7% increase compared to the same month last year. This growth, however, masks a widening gap between pure battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). BEV sales jumped by 16% year-over-year, underscoring robust consumer demand for fully electric models. In contrast, PHEV registrations fell by 11%, continuing a downward trend that has persisted for several months. This divergence highlights a shifting preference among buyers, who increasingly opt for BEVs as charging infrastructure improves and battery technology advances.

The strong BEV performance helped push electric vehicles’ overall share of the global passenger car market to 27% in July. This milestone reflects the accelerating transition away from internal combustion engines, driven by supportive policies, falling battery costs, and a broader lineup of compelling electric models from automakers worldwide. While the overall plugin market growth might seem modest, the underlying momentum for BEVs signals a decisive move toward full electrification.

For automakers, the message is clear: investing in pure electric platforms is paying off, while reliance on plug-in hybrids as a transitional technology may be waning. As the industry heads into the second half of the year, all eyes will be on whether BEVs can maintain their double-digit growth pace and what that means for global emissions reduction targets.
