Global EV Battery Sector in Early 2026: Chinese Players Dominate, CATL Leads

The first five months of 2026 saw a clear power shift in the global EV battery landscape, with Chinese manufacturers cementing their dominance. According to the latest market data, CATL commanded a leading 40.2% share of the global market during January–May, followed by BYD with 14.4%. These two firms alone accounted for more than half of all batteries deployed in electric vehicles worldwide during that period.
Notably, seven of the top ten battery suppliers were Chinese companies, collectively holding a substantial 72.6% share of the global market. This concentration underscores the strategic importance of Chinese supply chains in the electrification race, as automakers worldwide rely heavily on these suppliers for both performance and cost competitiveness.
While the data reflects a strong quarter for Chinese firms, it also signals growing regional dependence. As demand for EVs continues to climb, the market’s center of gravity appears firmly anchored in Asia, with implications for global supply security and pricing dynamics.
