Genesis Enters Hybrid Era With 347-HP GV80, Claiming 28 MPG

Genesis is stepping into hybrid territory for the first time, and it’s doing so with its largest SUV. The Korean luxury brand has confirmed that its inaugural hybrid model is a version of the GV80, producing a combined 347 horsepower while returning an estimated 28 miles per gallon. The move marks a notable shift for Genesis, which until now has built its lineup around conventional gasoline engines and pure-electric offerings under the Electrified badge.

The powertrain pairs a turbocharged gasoline engine with an electric motor, a configuration increasingly common among premium three-row SUVs seeking to balance performance with efficiency. That 347-hp figure places the hybrid GV80 in a competitive bracket alongside other electrified luxury utilities, giving buyers a middle ground between the standard gas model and a full EV. The 28-MPG estimate, meanwhile, would represent a meaningful improvement over the non-hybrid version for shoppers who cover a lot of highway miles.

The timing makes sense. Luxury SUV buyers have shown growing appetite for hybrids as a way to cut fuel costs without committing to charging infrastructure, and Genesis had been one of the few premium brands without such an option. Filling that gap allows the marque to keep customers who might otherwise drift toward electrified rivals from established German and Japanese competitors.

What remains to be seen is how the hybrid fits into Genesis’s broader product plan, including pricing and whether the technology spreads to other nameplates such as the GV70 or G80 sedan. For now, the GV80 hybrid serves as the brand’s first concrete answer to a market that keeps tilting toward electrified powertrains.
