Acura Prepares Large Hybrid SUV Flagship for Possible 2029 Launch

Acura is reportedly working on a new range-topping SUV that could debut around 2029, as the brand moves more aggressively into hybrid powertrains. According to Automotive News, the model—described as the ‘Acura XL’—would sit above the current MDX in the lineup, giving the marque a true flagship utility vehicle. The timing aligns with Acura’s broader strategy to expand its electrified offerings in the coming years.
The planned XL is expected to rely on a hybrid system rather than a fully electric setup, at least initially. That approach reflects Acura’s parent company Honda’s cautious but steady push into electrification: the automaker has said it will roll out hybrids across its core models before transitioning to battery-electric vehicles. A large hybrid SUV would let Acura compete in the profitable full-size segment while meeting tightening fuel-economy regulations.
There’s little official detail about what would power the XL or where it would be built. Automotive News doesn’t specify a platform, output figures, or pricing, and Acura has not confirmed the name or the 2029 target. The report should therefore be treated as an indication of intent rather than a locked-in product plan. Still, the move makes sense: luxury brands are increasingly using hybrids to bridge the gap between combustion and electric, especially in the large SUV class where towing and range needs complicate full electrification.
If it reaches showrooms, the Acura XL would enter a segment populated by the likes of the Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator, and Lexus LX. A hybrid flagship could also help Acura distinguish itself in a market where competitors are still mostly V8- or six-cylinder-powered. For now, the project remains unconfirmed, but the direction is clear: Acura sees hybridization as the next step for its biggest vehicles.
We’ll be watching for official word from Acura or Honda, likely through concept reveals or production announcements in the early 2030s. Until then, the ‘XL’ name and 2029 date remain speculative.
