Ford's New Patent Splits the EV Battery to Speed Up Charging

Ford has filed a patent for an electric-vehicle charging setup that divides the battery pack into two separate sections, each fed by its own charge port. Instead of routing all incoming power through a single connector, the system lets both halves of the pack recharge at the same time, which could shorten the time a driver spends plugged in. The design also opens the door to charging the two sections from different power sources or at different rates, giving engineers more flexibility in how a vehicle manages energy on the road.

The idea addresses a familiar bottleneck in EV ownership: charging speed is limited not just by how much power a station can deliver, but by how much the vehicle’s hardware can safely accept. By splitting the pack, Ford appears to be exploring a way to work around some of those single-port constraints without simply building a bigger, heavier charging architecture.

The patent filing is a technical document, not a production announcement, so there is no word yet on whether the split-battery approach will reach showrooms or which models might use it. For now it stands as a window into how one major automaker is thinking about making plug-in stops quicker and more convenient for drivers.
