Ford's New Patent Could Let EVs Charge Twice as Fast with Dual Ports

Ford has filed a patent for a split-battery charging system that uses two separate charge ports. The idea is to divide the vehicle’s battery pack into two sections that can be charged simultaneously, potentially cutting charging time in half. This approach differs from conventional single-port charging, where the entire pack is charged as one unit.

The patent addresses the challenge of slow charging speeds, especially for larger battery packs. By splitting the pack, each section can receive a higher charging rate without exceeding the limits of a single port. This could be particularly useful for commercial vehicles or large SUVs where downtime is critical.

While Ford hasn’t released an official statement, the patent suggests a practical solution to one of the main drawbacks of electric vehicles: long charging stops. If implemented, this technology could make road trips more convenient and help accelerate EV adoption.
