Ford Patents Swivel-Joint Charge Plug to Simplify EV Cable Handling

Ford has filed a patent application for an electric vehicle charging plug built around a swivel joint, a design that would let the connector pivot as it is maneuvered into a vehicle’s charge port. The filing, first flagged by Ford Authority, points to a practical annoyance many EV drivers know well: bulky cables and rigid plugs that resist the angle a parking spot or charging stall actually demands.
The core idea is straightforward. Instead of a fixed plug that forces the driver to twist the cable into position, the swivel joint allows the connector head to rotate independently of the cable. That added flexibility could reduce strain on both the plug and the port, and make plugging in less of a physical chore, especially for drivers dealing with tight garages, short cables or awkwardly placed chargers.
Ford has not issued a public statement explaining the patent, so the filing itself is the main window into the company’s thinking. As with any patent application, there is no guarantee the design will reach production vehicles or charging accessories. Automakers routinely file patents to protect ideas that never make it to market.
Still, the filing fits a broader pattern of automakers paying closer attention to the small, everyday friction points of EV ownership. Charging hardware may not be the headline feature of an electric car, but a plug that is easier to handle speaks directly to the experience drivers have every time they top up.
