Ferrari CEO Backs E-Fuels as a Carbon-Neutral Path for Its Engines

Ferrari’s chief executive has made clear that synthetic e-fuels can keep the brand’s combustion engines alive without derailing its carbon-reduction commitments. The position matters because Ferrari’s identity is tied to high-revving petrol power, and any shift away from it would reshape the company’s products.

The logic behind the CEO’s stance is that e-fuels, produced by combining hydrogen with captured CO2, can be dropped into existing internal-combustion engines. That means the emissions accounting depends on how the fuel is made rather than on what comes out of the tailpipe.

For Ferrari, the approach offers a way to protect the sound and character that customers pay for while still pursuing lower net emissions. It also positions the company differently from brands betting everything on battery-electric lineups.

E-fuels remain costly and energy-intensive to produce, and their overall climate benefit is still debated. Even so, Ferrari’s leadership is treating them as a serious complement to electrification rather than a distraction from it.
