European Airports' Expansion Plans Overshoot Climate Budgets, Study Finds

A new study from the European Federation for Transport and Environment (T&E) concludes that expansion plans at twenty of Europe’s largest airports are incompatible with both national climate targets and internationally agreed warming limits. The research indicates that the planned growth in airport capacity would exceed the emissions budget for limiting warming to 1.7 °C by as much as three times.

The findings place Europe’s aviation growth trajectory in direct conflict with the emissions reductions the continent has committed to under the Paris Agreement framework. While airports and airlines have pointed to efficiency improvements and alternative fuels as ways to reconcile growth with climate goals, the T&E analysis suggests the scale of planned expansion outstrips what those measures can offset.

The study adds a new dimension to the ongoing debate over how to decarbonize aviation, an industry that has proven difficult to electrify compared with road transport. As European governments weigh economic benefits of expanded air travel against legally binding climate commitments, the report’s authors argue that current expansion plans are not compatible with the continent’s stated environmental objectives.
