Estonia to install 5 MW megawatt charger for new electric ferry

Estonia is preparing its maritime infrastructure for the arrival of a new battery-electric ferry, scheduled to begin service on one of the country’s key ferry routes by the end of 2028. To support this vessel, high-capacity charging equipment will be installed at the port, enabling rapid turnaround times between crossings.

The charging system, supplied by PSW Power & Automation, will deliver up to five megawatts of power using their Megawatt Charging System. This high-performance setup is designed to meet the demanding energy needs of a large passenger and vehicle ferry, ensuring efficient and reliable operations.

This initiative marks a significant step in Estonia’s efforts to decarbonize its maritime sector, aligning with broader European trends toward electrifying short-sea shipping. The project underscores the growing importance of megawatt-level charging infrastructure for the future of sustainable transport.
