Equinor Energizes Its Largest US Battery Storage Facility in South Texas

Norwegian energy company Equinor has switched on its largest battery energy storage project in the United States to date. The facility, located in South Texas, is now feeding 100 megawatts of flexible capacity into a state grid that keeps setting new demand records.

Storage installations like this one are increasingly seen as a practical answer to the intermittency of renewable generation. By charging when power is plentiful and discharging during peak hours, batteries help smooth out supply and demand without requiring new fossil-fueled plants.

The Texas project marks a notable step in Equinor’s broader push beyond oil and gas, as the company builds out a portfolio that spans offshore wind, solar and grid-scale storage. The South Texas site now stands as the centerpiece of that US battery strategy.
