Elon Musk Joins X Takeover Live From Giga Texas, and Fans Have Questions

Tesla owners heading to Austin this weekend just got a headline they weren’t counting on. Elon Musk will appear at the X Takeover gathering at Giga Texas on Saturday, but not on the stage — he’s booked for a live virtual interview instead, news that broke Thursday night and spread quickly through Tesla’s online fanbase.

The virtual format shouldn’t come as a shock. Organizers at Tesla Owners Silicon Valley had deliberately tempered expectations in a September update, noting that Musk had turned up at the event twice before but making no promises about a third. In 2024 he made an unannounced appearance for roughly an hour in front of the San Luis Obispo crowd. This time the setup keeps him off the Austin grounds in person while still putting him in front of the audience, streamed free on the group’s X account.

Several firsts mark the 2026 edition. It’s the first X Takeover staged beyond California, and the first hosted at a Tesla site — the company supplies the venue, though the event itself is run independently by the owners’ group. Demand was sharp: tickets disappeared in eight days. The main program runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. CT and wraps with a drone and light show at 9 p.m. Maye Musk takes the keynote slot, design chief Franz von Holzhausen delivers a virtual keynote, and Nicki Minaj is billed as special guest. Joe Tegtmeyer, whose aerial footage has been used to document construction at Giga Texas, is also on the speaker list.

What Musk will actually discuss remains unannounced, but the surrounding week is dense with Tesla news. The company doubled its Cybercab fleet in Austin in late September, and Musk recently addressed the narrow extension of Robotaxi service hours. Texas DMV records now list 319 registered Cybercabs, a jump from 169, while NHTSA has set an October 30 deadline for Tesla’s sworn responses on Cybercab certification. Third-quarter earnings land October 21.

For anyone who isn’t traveling to Texas, the livestream is the practical option. Musk has a track record of going further in unscripted settings than in prepared statements, which is exactly why Saturday’s conversation is likely to draw more attention than the rest of the schedule combined.
