Electrification as Energy Sovereignty: Rethinking Europe's Post-2030 Transport Strategy

Europe’s repeated energy crises have exposed a deeper vulnerability: a transport sector still largely dependent on imported fuels. As the EU shapes its Renewable Energy Framework for the period after 2030, simply raising the renewable share in transport may not be sufficient. The framework also needs to confront where that energy comes from and how securely it can be supplied.

Electrification sits at the center of this rethink. Shifting cars, buses, and freight toward electricity generated domestically offers a path away from volatile fuel imports, tying the transport transition directly to the goal of energy sovereignty rather than treating it as a separate climate exercise.

That means the next framework has to look beyond headline percentages. It must consider sourcing, infrastructure, and the resilience of supply chains that keep electric transport running. Sovereignty, in this reading, is not a slogan but a design principle for how Europe powers its mobility.
