China's Auto Market Sees 11th Straight Monthly Decline as Exports Accelerate

China’s domestic car sales have now contracted for eleven consecutive months, according to industry data, with virtually every automaker feeling the impact of the sustained downturn. The prolonged slump underscores persistent weak consumer demand in the world’s largest auto market.

Yet not all indicators are negative. New energy vehicle (NEV) penetration hit a new record in July, signaling that electrified models continue to gain ground even as the overall market shrinks. The shift suggests a structural change in buyer preferences rather than a uniform collapse.

Meanwhile, exports have surged, offering a much-needed outlet for manufacturers grappling with oversupply at home. The divergence between falling domestic sales and rising overseas shipments highlights the increasing importance of global markets for Chinese automakers.

As the downturn stretches into its eleventh month, the pressure on OEMs remains intense. The coming months will reveal whether NEV growth and export strength can offset the drag from domestic weakness.
