CATL Unveils China's First Standardized Battery Swap Network for Light Trucks

Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL), the world’s largest battery maker, has introduced what it calls China’s first standardized battery-swapping ecosystem for light-duty trucks. The initiative, developed in partnership with logistics firm DST, targets a major economic zone in southern China, with plans to deploy 5,000 swap-capable light trucks by the end of 2026. This move signals a strategic push beyond passenger EVs, aiming to electrify commercial fleets with quicker energy replenishment.

The new system standardizes battery packs and swap stations, allowing trucks from different manufacturers to use the same infrastructure. Drivers can replace a depleted battery in minutes, similar to CATL’s existing passenger car swap services, but tailored for the higher energy demands of commercial vehicles. This could reduce downtime and total cost of ownership for fleet operators, making electric trucks more viable for regional logistics.

CATL’s expansion into light truck swapping reflects a broader trend in China, where battery-as-a-service models are gaining traction. By creating a unified standard, the company hopes to avoid fragmented infrastructure and encourage wider adoption. The partnership with DST, which operates extensive logistics networks, provides a ready-made customer base for the initial rollout. If successful, this model could be replicated in other regions and vehicle categories.

Industry observers see this as a significant step toward commercial vehicle electrification, though challenges remain. Standardization across brands and the initial capital investment for swap stations are hurdles. However, with government support for green logistics and CATL’s manufacturing scale, the project could accelerate the transition to zero-emission freight in China.
