CATL's Aviation Battery Passes Critical Safety Test, Boosting eVTOL Development

CATL has announced a major milestone in the development of batteries for electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. The company’s aviation-grade battery cells, which deliver an energy density of 350 Wh/kg, have successfully passed a demanding safety test involving adjacent-cell thermal runaway propagation. This test, which triggered two neighboring cells simultaneously, resulted in no thermal runaway propagation—a world-first achievement for such high-energy-density cells.
This breakthrough is significant because it addresses one of the most critical safety concerns for electric aviation: the risk of battery fires spreading between cells. By preventing thermal propagation, CATL’s technology enhances the reliability of battery packs, a key requirement for certification and commercial operation of eVTOLs.
The successful test also underscores CATL’s commitment to advancing beyond automotive applications. The company is positioning its aviation battery line as a foundational technology for the emerging urban air mobility sector, where safety and energy density are paramount. With this achievement, CATL brings the prospect of practical eVTOLs closer to reality, potentially revolutionizing short-distance urban travel.
