CATL Aligns With BYD on 2027 Solid-State Battery Pilot Goal

CATL has set its sights on beginning trial production of solid-state batteries in 2027, matching a timeline previously outlined by rival BYD. The two Chinese battery giants are now targeting the same milestone year for initial manufacturing runs, though full-scale mass production remains further out.

Solid-state cells replace the liquid electrolyte found in conventional lithium-ion batteries with a solid material, a change that promises higher energy density and improved safety. However, technical hurdles around materials, interfaces, and manufacturing scalability have kept the technology largely in the lab. Both companies have been investing heavily in R&D to move beyond these barriers.

The synchronized 2027 target suggests a broader industry push to commercialize solid-state technology, with Chinese players aiming to lead. While pilot lines will test feasibility, the real test will be cost and volume production—challenges that have historically delayed solid-state adoption.
