California Slant-Six Survivor: 1964 Dodge Dart GT Convertible Listed at $4,500

A tired but apparently original 1964 Dodge Dart GT convertible has surfaced for sale in Mountain Club, California, carrying an asking price of $4,500. The car wears faded paint, shows rust starting in the passenger-side quarter panel, and its convertible top and chrome trim have held up better than the bodywork.

Under the hood sits a 225-cubic-inch slant-six rated at 145 gross horsepower, mated to a TorqueFlite three-speed automatic. According to the listing, the engine runs and the car shifts cleanly through the forward gears, but reverse is reportedly gone. Enthusiasts familiar with these push-button-era transmissions note that selecting reverse before a complete stop can damage the reverse band, and worn shift linkage can imitate the same symptom.

The headline claim is the odometer reading. The seller describes the car as having covered 529,673 miles, though the odometer itself displays only 29,697. The slant-six has a well-earned reputation for longevity, but a half-million-mile figure would almost certainly involve at least one rebuild, so documentation would be worth requesting before any money changes hands.

Inside, the cabin shows its age: the driver’s seat bottom is shredded, and the other seating positions need attention, along with general reupholstery work. The seller also bills the car as a Golden Anniversary edition, marking Dodge’s 50th year in 1964, though period references suggest such cars typically carried gold trim, two-tone paint and special steering wheel scripting. This example does not appear to include those cues.
