BYD's Tang L Crosses Into Europe as the Atto 8, Bringing 9-Minute Flash Charging

BYD used the Paris Motor Show stage to pull the wraps off the Atto 8, the European-market interpretation of its Tang L SUV. With the debut, the Chinese automaker is pushing its quickest charging technology into a region where it is still building brand recognition among premium electric buyers. The unveiling took place on October 12, and BYD has penciled in European sales for the first quarter of 2027.
The headline feature is what BYD calls flash charging. According to the company, the Atto 8 can move from 10 percent to 70 percent state of charge in five minutes, and reach 97 percent in nine minutes. Even in bitterly cold conditions, the automaker claims a 20-to-97 percent top-up takes twelve minutes. That cold-weather figure starts from a higher state of charge than the normal-condition test, a detail worth noting when comparing the two results. Both the Design and Excellence trims carry a 115-kWh pack, and the Atto 8 is the first model wearing the BYD badge in Europe to combine the second-generation Blade Battery with this charging capability.
Hardware and infrastructure are moving in parallel. BYD intends to have 3,000 flash charging stations operating across Europe by the end of 2027, a network build-out that will be essential if the charging speeds quoted on paper are to translate into real-world convenience for owners.
Two drivetrain layouts anchor the range. The Design variant sends 340 kW (456 hp) to the rear wheels and is rated at 405 miles of WLTP combined range, roughly 652 kilometers. The Excellence grade adds a front motor for all-wheel drive, lifting system output to 570 kW and cutting the 0-62 mph sprint to 4.6 seconds, with WLTP range settling at 374 miles, or about 602 kilometers.
Dimensionally, the Atto 8 stretches 5,040 mm long, 1,996 mm wide and 1,760 mm tall — the same footprint as the Tang L that reached Chinese customers in 2025 — and seats seven across three rows. Inside, a 15.6-inch central touchscreen handles Google navigation, a voice assistant and an app store, while heating, ventilation and massage are fitted to the front seats and the outer second-row positions. Cargo space stands at 270 liters with all seats raised, opening up to 1,960 liters once the second and third rows fold, plus a 136-liter front trunk.
The Tang L arrived in China in April 2025 with both battery-electric and plug-in hybrid options, the electric version launching with a 100.5-kWh battery and a 1,000-volt architecture. The European Atto 8 pairs a larger battery with the next-generation fast-charging setup, keeping rapid replenishment at the center of BYD’s pitch to shoppers considering a large electric SUV.
