BYD Introduces Atto 8: A Seven-Seat EV with Ultra-Fast Charging for Europe

BYD has pulled the wraps off the Atto 8, a fully electric seven-seat SUV that will replace the Tang in European showrooms. The move signals the Chinese automaker’s push to refresh its lineup with models tailored to European tastes and charging standards.

The Atto 8’s headline feature is its ultra-fast charging capability, which BYD claims can replenish the battery in a fraction of the time conventional EVs require. While exact figures were not disclosed, the technology is expected to leverage BYD’s latest battery platform, potentially cutting charging stops to around 20 minutes for a 10–80% top-up. This aligns with Europe’s expanding network of high-power chargers, making long-distance family travel more practical.

Inside, the Atto 8 offers three rows of seats, accommodating up to seven passengers. It replaces the Tang, a model that has been on sale in Europe for several years but now ages against newer rivals. The Tang was one of BYD’s first European offerings, and its retirement underscores how quickly the company is iterating its product portfolio.

The launch comes as BYD accelerates its European expansion, with new dealerships and local production plans in Hungary. Competitors like Tesla, Volkswagen, and Hyundai are also rolling out seven-seat electric SUVs, making this a hotly contested segment. BYD’s pricing strategy and final specifications will be critical to its success.

BYD has not yet announced a precise on-sale date or pricing for the Atto 8, but expect it to hit European markets in the coming months. The model will be a key test of whether BYD can move beyond its value-focused image and attract mainstream family buyers.
