BYD Atto 8 Flagship SUV Arrives with 115 kWh Battery and Nine-Minute Charging

BYD has pulled the wraps off the Atto 8, a new range-topping electric SUV that will take over flagship duties from the Tang in the Chinese brand’s European line-up. Measuring 5.04 metres long, 2.00 metres wide and 1.76 metres tall, the Atto 8 is a three-row battery-electric family hauler that can be configured for up to seven occupants. Sales in Europe are set to begin in the first quarter of 2027, and the model made its public debut at the 2026 Paris Motor Show.
The headline technology is BYD’s new Flash Charging system, which reaches Europe for the first time on this vehicle. Built around the second generation of the company’s Blade Battery, the 115 kWh pack can reportedly go from 10 to 70 per cent in just five minutes under the manufacturer’s stated conditions, and all the way to 97 per cent in a total of nine minutes. Cold weather is said to add only around three minutes to the process even at temperatures as low as -30°C. The catch: drivers need a compatible charger, and BYD expects 3,000 Flash Chargers to be operational across Europe by the end of 2027, with 300 of them planned for Germany by the end of 2026.
Two drivetrains will be offered. The Design RWD variant uses a single rear motor producing 340 kW and 365 Nm, enough for a 0-100 km/h sprint of 8.0 seconds, while its 115 kWh battery delivers a WLTP combined range of up to 653 kilometres. Stepping up to the Excellence AWD adds a front-axle motor for a combined 570 kW and 775 Nm, cutting the benchmark acceleration to 4.6 seconds and still returning up to 602 kilometres of WLTP range. The model is expected to cost more than the Tang it replaces — official figures are still pending, but with the outgoing Tang currently discounted from €75,000 to €47,990, a starting price below €75,000 looks unlikely.
Inside, the cabin is trimmed in leather, suede and soft-touch materials beneath a panoramic glass roof of roughly 2.4 square metres. The driver faces a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 26-inch head-up display and a 15.6-inch central touchscreen, with infotainment that bundles Google Maps, Google Assistant and the Google Play Store. First- and second-row seats are heated, ventilated and fitted with massage functions, and a three-zone climate system with rear controls is included. Practical touches range from a front compartment that can be cooled or heated between -6°C and +50°C to twin 50-watt inductive phone pads and four USB-C ports. Luggage space comes to 270 litres behind the third row, expanding to 1,960 litres with the rear seats folded, plus a 136-litre frunk up front.
BYD executive vice president Stella Li framed the launch as proof that the company’s R&D spending is translating directly into customer-facing gains, describing Flash Charging as the breakthrough that brings recharging times close to refuelling and helps put range anxiety to rest. Whether European buyers see it that way will depend heavily on how quickly the compatible charging network materialises before the Atto 8 reaches showrooms.
