Boeing Hands Its Flying-Taxi Unit to Archer Aviation as eVTOL Race Tightens

Boeing has decided to fold its flying-taxi venture into Archer Aviation, according to the Wall Street Journal. The move effectively ends Boeing’s independent effort to bring an air taxi to market and instead backs a rival already working on electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft.

The shift is a notable consolidation in the emerging eVTOL sector, where a handful of developers are racing to certify battery-powered aircraft for urban air mobility. Rather than sustain a separate program, Boeing is putting its weight behind Archer, which has been developing its own electric air taxi designs.

For Archer, the backing of an aviation giant could add engineering credibility and industrial scale at a time when certification and production costs are mounting. For Boeing, it is a way to stay exposed to the segment without carrying a standalone venture.

The deal underscores how quickly the flying-taxi landscape is narrowing, with larger aerospace players choosing partnerships over parallel internal programs.
