BMW's New iX3 EV Surprises with Strong Demand, Including China, Despite Few Details

BMW’s all-new iX3 electric SUV is off to a remarkable start, with global orders approaching the 100,000 mark. This strong interest is not limited to Western markets; in China, where the competition among EVs is fierce, BMW dealers are reportedly swamped. The model, which has been on sale for less than a week in the region, has already generated tens of thousands of pre-orders, signaling a major win for the German automaker in the world’s largest EV market.
The surge is notable because BMW has yet to reveal the iX3’s full technical specifications, such as its final driving range and battery capacity. The company has largely marketed the vehicle through a single preview image, which has not hindered interest. This suggests that brand loyalty and the promise of a sporty, high-quality EV are enough to drive initial sales, even against local rivals like Nio, XPeng, and BYD.
For context, the first-generation iX3 faced slower adoption in China, partially due to its conservative design and range. The new model, which features a more futuristic and aggressive look, appears to have resonated better with consumers. Auto analysts believe that the strong start could help BMW solidify its position in the premium EV segment, where it faces stiff competition from Tesla and emerging Chinese luxury brands.
While the production ramp-up is still in its early stages, BMW is optimistic about meeting the demand. The company plans to build the iX3 at its plant in Shenyang, China, for the global market, which could help expedite deliveries. If the current order trend continues, the iX3 might become one of BMW’s best-selling EVs, with potential spillover benefits for the brand’s entire electric lineup.
