BMW iX4 Debuts: Neue Klasse Tech Wrapped in an SUV Coupe

BMW is stretching its Neue Klasse platform into new territory with the iX4, an electric SUV coupe that marks the third model built on the architecture and the first to push it beyond the brand’s core body styles. The vehicle is scheduled to arrive in March 2027, with US pricing starting at $66,200 before destination charges.

The launch variant combines a 112.2 kWh battery with 400 kW charging capability, and BMW is quoting a preliminary range estimate of 428 miles. That figure sits ahead of a higher-performance M60 xDrive version rated at 603 hp, giving buyers a choice between long-distance efficiency and outright pace from the same underpinnings. Like the iX3 before it, the iX4 will roll out of BMW’s plant in Debrecen, Hungary.

Under the sheet metal, the iX4 runs BMW’s 800V sixth-generation drive system, which introduces new cylindrical cells offering roughly 20 percent more volumetric energy density than the prismatic cells they replace. Cost control is clearly part of the engineering brief: BMW says combining an electrically excited rear motor with a front induction motor trims energy losses by 40 percent, cuts production costs by 20 percent and reduces drive weight by 10 percent compared with the previous generation.

Software plays an equally prominent role. The iX4 runs Operating System X, which BMW derived from the Android Open Source Project to allow continuous over-the-air updates. It hosts a voice assistant built on Amazon Alexa+ large language model technology, while attentive hands-free driving is offered on highways at speeds up to 85 mph.

Mike Reichelt, Head of Neue Klasse, BMW Compact and Midsize Class, framed the model as an emotional addition to the lineup: “With the new fully electric BMW iX4, we are expanding the Neue Klasse portfolio with a particularly emotional vehicle. Its striking proportions, elegant coupe silhouette and Neue Klasse technologies combine to create a truly distinctive character. Blending sportiness, expressive design and innovative technology, the BMW iX4 sets a bold new accent within our fully electric BMW portfolio.”

The iX4 ultimately serves as a test of how far a single platform can stretch. By applying Neue Klasse hardware and software to a niche body style, BMW is betting that a shared architecture can support both volume models and lower-selling derivatives without sacrificing the technology story that defines the range.
