Jaguar's Electric Flagship Arrives: The $160,000 Type 01 Heads to Production

Jaguar has finally pulled the wraps off the production version of its radical new electric flagship, confirming that the car widely previewed by the Type 00 concept will reach customers as the Type 01. The reveal took place in New York, roughly two years after the concept caused a stir in Miami. At the time, much of the reaction focused on the brand’s decision to abandon nearly nine decades of design heritage. Now, with a real, road-ready machine on stage, the conversation can shift to the vehicle itself.

The Type 01 retains the dramatic proportions that defined the show car, including a tall, bluff nose, a long flat hood, a low roofline, and a tailgate without a rear window. Massive 23-inch wheels dominate the profile, though Jaguar will offer 21-inch units as a more affordable alternative. At 204 inches long and just 57.5 inches tall, the car sits low and long. One detail Jaguar is keen to highlight is the so-called luxury gap between the front axle and the A-pillar, which accounts for 17 percent of the vehicle’s length — the same proportion found on the classic E-Type. A brass-look trim piece, laser-engraved with the leaper emblem, runs through that gap. Jaguar describes the rear quarter panel as its “impossible panel,” formed from aluminum across five planes with three feature lines converging at a single point. A pop-up spoiler and swiveling grille vanes remain hidden until needed.

Underneath, a tri-motor electric drivetrain produces 1,016 horsepower and 1,006 lb-ft of torque, which Jaguar calls the most powerful road car it has ever built. The company quotes a 0-62 mph time of 3.2 seconds and has deliberately avoided chasing sub-two-second acceleration figures. A 118 kWh battery is rated for 400 miles of EPA range, and the 850-volt architecture is said to add 200 miles of range in just 13 minutes of charging. Jaguar estimates the curb weight at around 6,000 pounds, distributed evenly between the front and rear axles.

Pricing starts at roughly £120,000 in the U.K. and about $160,000 in the United States, before tariffs and taxes. Order books will not open until early 2027, with first deliveries expected in the second half of that year — assuming the timeline holds. The schedule has already slipped by more than a year, a delay Jaguar has attributed to a weakening EV market and a serious cyberattack at JLR. One unusual note about the design process: according to Jaguar, the production Type 01 came first, and the Type 00 concept was derived from it rather than the other way around. The brand also cites internal data from over 900,000 vehicles across 51 countries suggesting the car’s range covers 99.7 percent of journeys.

For Jaguar, the Type 01 represents far more than a new model. It is the clearest signal yet of the company’s reinvention as an all-electric luxury brand, and it arrives at a moment when demand for high-priced EVs is under pressure. Whether the market embraces such a bold, expensive statement will be the real test.
