Blue Solutions and AVL Put Solid-State Batteries Through Safety Testing

Solid-state battery developer Blue Solutions has partnered with engineering and testing specialist AVL to subject its cells to safety validation work. The two companies carried out testing aimed at assessing how the solid-state technology behaves under conditions that conventional lithium-ion cells are routinely checked against.

The collaboration points to a practical step in the maturation of solid-state batteries: before any chemistry reaches series production, it has to demonstrate that it can cope with abuse scenarios without the failure modes associated with liquid-electrolyte designs. Blue Solutions has long worked on solid-state cells, and pairing that development with AVL’s testing infrastructure gives the technology an independent benchmark.

Safety validation remains one of the main hurdles standing between solid-state lab results and real vehicles. Automakers and cell makers are chasing the chemistry because it promises higher energy density and a reduced fire risk, but claims only carry weight once they survive standardized testing.
