A recent video shared by ABC7 News Bay Area captured a drone delivering a package into a swimming pool in Texas. The footage shows the drone hovering above the water, opening its hatch, and letting the parcel splash down. It’s a moment that highlights the challenges of precision drop-off when homes have pools, ponds, trees, and other obstacles that can interfere with a drone’s landing zone.

For now, these mishaps may seem amusing, but they also raise questions about reliability and customer trust. Amazon has previously stated that it uses a combination of computer vision and customer-provided landing targets to improve accuracy. Yet, incidents like these suggest that perfecting the technology is still a work in progress. As drone deliveries become commonplace, the industry will need to find ways to reduce the likelihood of soggy packages — and disappointed customers.
