  • Link to the EV Academy via internal references.

ICE-48 — ICE vs EV Powertrain

ASSUMPTION — This lesson compares the two architectures; it does not give an “absolute best”, but shows trade-offs.

In this lesson you will learn:

  • The two powertrain chains
  • Efficiency, energy density and emissions trade-offs
  • EV Academy links

1. Powertrain Chains

  • ICE — tank → engine → gearbox → wheels.
  • EV — battery → inverter → electric machine → reduction gear → wheels.

FACT — In an ICE, energy is stored chemically in fuel; in an EV, in a battery. The conversion path is entirely different, shaping efficiency and emissions profiles.

2. Efficiency and Energy Density

FACT — An electric machine + inverter is far more efficient than an ICE over a wide range. But liquid fuel has far higher energy density than current batteries — the basis of ICE’s range/refuel advantage and EV’s efficiency advantage.

3. Emissions

FACT — An ICE emits CO2, NOx, PM and HC at the tailpipe; an EV has no tailpipe emissions, but upstream (well-to-wheel) and battery-manufacturing emissions exist. Comparison must consider the full life cycle, not just the tailpipe.

4. Trade-offs

INTERPRETATION — ICE offers high energy density, fast refueling and mature infrastructure, but local emissions and lower efficiency. EV offers high efficiency, zero tailpipe emissions and fewer moving parts, but charging time and battery mass/energy-density constraints. “Best” depends on application.

FACT — For the EV side, see the AUTOVOLTIX EV Academy: EV-01 (What Is an Electric Vehicle?), EV-04 (EV vs ICE), EV-05 (Electric Motors), EV-10 (Battery Fundamentals).

5. Summary

  • ICE: chemical fuel + combustion; EV: battery + electric machine.
  • EV is more efficient; ICE has higher energy density.
  • Emissions are assessed over the life cycle.
  • Trade-offs are application-dependent.
