Volkswagen Revives the Tiguan Name for Its Electric Era

Volkswagen Revives the Tiguan Name for Its Electric Era

Volkswagen is giving its most popular SUV a battery-powered future. The German automaker has confirmed that the Tiguan, long a staple of its combustion lineup, will spawn an all-electric variant badged as the ID. Tiguan. The new model is set to replace the ID.4 and ID.5 in Volkswagen’s electric range, marking a shift away from the numbered naming scheme that defined its early EV push.

The electric Tiguan is scheduled to make its official debut in early October, with the first examples reaching certain markets at the beginning of next year. Until then, prototypes will continue racking up miles under camouflage wrap. Volkswagen says the electric version will sit alongside the existing petrol and hybrid Tiguan variants, giving buyers a choice of powertrains under one familiar nameplate.

Brand CEO Thomas Schäfer framed the move as a natural evolution. He noted that more than 8.3 million Tiguans have been built over the years, a figure he said reflects the trust customers place in the model. According to Schäfer, the electric variant will carry forward the Tiguan’s reputation for space, design and usability into a zero-emission package.

The decision follows the recent introductions of the ID. Polo and ID. Cross, which signaled Volkswagen’s intention to blend its established model names with the ID prefix. By attaching a well-known badge to its next electric SUV, the company appears to be betting that familiarity will help persuade mainstream buyers to make the switch.
