Volkswagen Ditches ID Numbers: Electric Tiguan Arrives in October

Volkswagen is preparing to show its next battery-powered model in early October 2026, and this time the badge on the tailgate will be a familiar one. The compact electric SUV will wear the Tiguan name, effectively taking over from the ID.4 and ID.5 that have carried the brand’s electric compact torch since 2021.

European order books are expected to open in early 2027, with a North American rollout confirmed but pushed back to a later point on the calendar. The zero-emission Tiguan will be sold side by side with the existing combustion and hybrid versions, giving buyers a choice of powertrains under one nameplate rather than splitting them across two naming schemes.

It is the third time Volkswagen has moved a well-known badge onto a battery platform, following the ID. Cross and ID. Polo. The logic is simple enough: the Tiguan and its larger Tayron stablemate together cleared one million deliveries last year, while the ID.4 and ID.5 have accumulated more than 950,000 units since launch. Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer framed the switch as a way of transferring hard-won customer trust, noting that over 8.3 million Tiguans have been built and describing the model as a versatile, premium proposition that will now carry its promise into electric territory.

What the electric Tiguan will cost, how far it will travel on a charge and what hardware it will pack remain under wraps. Test mules are still circulating in heavy camouflage ahead of the October reveal.
