US Trade Panel Backs Duties on Chinese Van-Type Trailers

A US trade body has concluded that van-type trailers and their component sets brought in from China are harming domestic manufacturers, opening the door to fresh import charges. The US International Trade Commission voted on 25 September 2026 in favour of the injury finding, which was required before the US Department of Commerce could turn its earlier determinations into formal orders.

Commerce had already concluded that these trailers were being sold in the American market beneath fair value and were propped up by Chinese state support. The commission’s injury ruling was the remaining procedural hurdle, and it passed without any opposition. Chairman Brett W. Doyle backed the decision, alongside Commissioners Jason E. Kearns, Peter-Anthony Pappas and David Foley Jr.; Bart Thanhauser and Samuel T. Negatu did not take part.

Notably, the case reaches beyond completed units to include the subassemblies used to build them, giving the measures reach across the supply chain. That matters both to US trailer manufacturers and to fleets that rely on van-type equipment as a workhorse of road freight.

The commission’s notice stopped short of disclosing duty rates, shipment volumes or the companies that brought the complaint. A fuller report, including the commissioners’ reasoning and the evidence reviewed, is expected to be published online by 5 November 2026.
