US Government Flags 'Profound Concern' Over Ford's China Battery Partnership

The Trump administration has voiced what it calls “profound concern” about Ford’s collaboration with Chinese battery supplier CATL, signaling a fresh layer of political scrutiny for the American automaker’s electric vehicle strategy.

At the heart of the matter is a licensing arrangement in which Ford draws on CATL’s technology to produce batteries at a new plant in Michigan. Although Ford would own and operate the facility, the reliance on Chinese expertise has drawn attention from Washington at a time of heightened tension over technology transfer and supply chain security.

For Ford, the pushback adds another complication to its EV rollout. The company has positioned the project as a way to create American jobs and build batteries domestically, but the political headwinds could force it to defend or rethink how closely it works with its Chinese partner.

The episode underscores a broader dilemma facing global automakers: they need affordable, proven battery technology to compete in electric vehicles, yet sourcing that know-how from China increasingly carries political risk.
