Ultraviolette Bets on Premium Performance First, Mass Market Later

Ultraviolette Automotive is taking a different path in India’s electric two-wheeler market. While many startups chase mass-market appeal with affordable scooters, Ultraviolette launched with high-performance electric motorcycles. In a recent interview, Chief Product Officer Vinayak Bhat explained the rationale: it’s easier to scale down from premium performance than to move up from budget models.

The company’s flagship, the F77, features a 100-volt architecture—a rarity in the two-wheeler segment. Bhat highlighted that this high-voltage system enables better performance and faster charging, setting a foundation that can be adapted for future models. Ultraviolette is now preparing to expand its lineup, though specific details on upcoming models remain under wraps.

Ultraviolette’s European expansion has provided valuable lessons. The company has had to navigate different regulatory landscapes and customer expectations, particularly around charging infrastructure and after-sales support. Bhat noted that these challenges have helped refine their approach to product development and market entry.

While the premium strategy has given Ultraviolette a technological edge, the question remains whether it can translate that into mass-market success. The company believes its top-down approach will allow it to eventually offer more accessible models without compromising on quality. As the electric two-wheeler market in India evolves, Ultraviolette’s bet on performance-first could prove prescient—or it could remain a niche player. Only time will tell.
