Toyota to Build Lexus Electric SUV in Shanghai Plant from 2027

Toyota is set to begin production of a Lexus electric SUV at its wholly owned Shanghai facility in the second half of 2027, starting with a modest monthly volume of 1,000 units. The move marks a strategic entry into China’s competitive EV market with a locally made premium model.

According to a recent report, the automaker plans to gradually scale output to tens of thousands of units annually beginning in 2028. This phased approach allows Toyota to fine-tune manufacturing quality and align with demand before ramping up production.

The decision underscores Toyota’s commitment to strengthening its electric vehicle lineup in China, the world’s largest auto market. With a fully owned plant, the company retains greater control over operations and technology transfer.

As Lexus accelerates its global EV strategy, the Shanghai production hub will play a crucial role in serving both domestic customers and potentially export markets in the region.
