Toyota's Electrified Lineup Now Accounts For 61% Of U.S. Sales

Toyota’s bet on hybrids keeps paying off. In the third quarter, electrified models—mostly conventional hybrids, plus some plug-in hybrids and battery-electric vehicles—made up 61% of the automaker’s U.S. sales mix, a new record for the company.

All told, Toyota and Lexus moved 633,223 vehicles stateside between July and September, only a hair above last year’s figure. Yet the electrified slice of that pie jumped 28.5% to 363,367 units. Analysts point to elevated fuel prices, tied to the conflict with Iran, as a nudge pushing shoppers toward more economical powertrains—and Toyota’s hybrid-heavy catalog is well positioned to catch them.

On the battery-electric side, the picture is more modest but improving. The refreshed bZ nearly doubled its volume year over year, reaching 24,994 units through September, putting it ahead of Chevrolet’s Equinox EV but still behind Hyundai’s Ioniq 5. Newer entries like the C-HR and bZ Woodland have yet to contribute meaningful numbers, with 7,215 and 2,600 units respectively.

Lexus followed a similar pattern. The RX remained the brand’s volume leader, with hybrids and plug-in hybrids making up a large share of its 89,824 year-to-date sales, while the electric RZ doubled to 10,214 units. The new-generation ES Hybrid is also outselling its electric sibling by more than two to one.
