Toyota Puts Fuel Cell Power on Display at the Hakone Ekiden

Toyota is using one of Japan’s most-watched sporting events to showcase hydrogen fuel cell technology. At the Hakone Ekiden, the company’s annual long-distance relay race, Toyota will support operations with fuel cell versions of vehicles already familiar in its lineup.

The move fits Toyota’s longer-standing strategy of keeping fuel cell electric vehicles in its portfolio alongside battery-electric and hybrid options. Rather than introducing an all-new model, the automaker is applying its hydrogen powertrain to existing nameplates, which lets it both support event logistics and put the technology in front of a large audience.
