Toyota Patent Imagines Self-Driving Drone Tankers That Recharge Cars on the Move

Toyota has filed a patent for an unusual idea: autonomous drone tankers that could bring energy directly to vehicles, whether they run on electricity or conventional fuel. Rather than forcing drivers to hunt for a plug or a pump, the system would dispatch a self-driving unit to meet a car wherever it is and top it up there.

The concept points to a persistent headache for electric vehicle owners in particular: charging still ties a journey to fixed infrastructure. A mobile, self-piloting tanker would in theory cut that cord, letting a car take on power while parked or even while travelling. The same hardware could serve combustion vehicles, according to the filing, which is why Toyota frames the idea around both recharging and refueling.

As with any patent, there is no guarantee the technology will reach production. Automakers routinely protect concepts that never leave the drawing board, and the practical hurdles here — routing, safety and the cost of operating a fleet of autonomous energy carriers — are substantial. Still, the application offers a glimpse of how Toyota is thinking about the future of energy delivery for cars, not just the cars themselves.
