Tesla's Driverless Cybercab Kicks Off US Operations, Eyes China Debut in Mid-September

Tesla has started operating its dedicated robotaxi, the Cybercab, in the United States, according to an announcement from the company. The vehicle, which lacks a steering wheel and pedals, marks a significant step in Tesla’s autonomous mobility strategy. While commercial service details remain limited, the launch signals a broader push into self-driving transportation.

In parallel, Tesla plans to showcase the Cybercab in major Chinese cities, including Beijing and Shanghai, beginning in mid-September. The display tour is intended to highlight the company’s technological progress and generate interest among Chinese consumers. However, Tesla has no immediate plans to sell the vehicle or launch commercial operations in the country.

China remains a key market for Tesla, but regulatory hurdles for fully autonomous vehicles are substantial. By exhibiting the Cybercab without a sales roadmap, Tesla may be testing public and official reactions. The move also keeps the brand in the spotlight amid intensifying competition from local EV makers.

The Cybercab’s US operations represent a milestone, yet widespread adoption depends on further regulatory approvals and infrastructure readiness. As Tesla expands its robotaxi ambitions, the coming months will reveal how quickly driverless services can scale beyond initial deployments.
