Tesla Joins Nine Automakers in China-Wide Campaign to Improve Hidden Door Handle Safety

Tesla is recalling approximately three million vehicles in China as part of a broader industry initiative to address potential safety hazards associated with hidden door handles. Along with eight other manufacturers, the electric vehicle giant will be installing warning labels designed to help occupants quickly locate manual door releases in emergency situations.

The recall stems from concerns that the flush, aerodynamic handles favored by modern EVs can be difficult to identify, especially for passengers unfamiliar with the vehicle. In the event of a crash, or when the automatic release system malfunctions, these hidden handles may prevent occupants from exiting the car promptly. The mandated labels will provide clear visual cues, ensuring that both front and rear passengers can find the mechanical release mechanism without confusion.

This coordinated effort reflects a growing regulatory focus on emergency accessibility in vehicles featuring minimalist exterior designs.
