Stellantis CEO Dismisses Split Rumors: 'Not Plausible'

Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares has publicly pushed back against speculation that the automotive giant could be broken up, calling such a move “not plausible.” His remarks, made during a Bloomberg Television interview, come amid ongoing chatter about the future structure of the company formed by the 2021 merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and PSA Group.
The CEO’s comment addresses persistent questions about whether Stellantis’ diverse brand portfolio — which includes Fiat, Peugeot, Jeep, Ram, and others — might be better off separated. Tavares has consistently argued that the company’s scale and shared platforms provide a competitive advantage, particularly as the industry pours billions into electric vehicle development and software.
A split would be a complex and costly undertaking, given the deep integration of manufacturing, engineering, and supply chains across Stellantis’ brands. The company has instead focused on consolidating its operations and leveraging its size to drive down costs, especially in the EV transition.
Tavares’ dismissal of the idea is likely to reassure investors who see the merger’s synergies as key to Stellantis’ long-term profitability. However, the CEO has also been candid about the challenges facing the auto industry, including fierce competition from Chinese EV makers and the need for significant investment in new technology.
The comments underscore Stellantis’ commitment to its current strategy, even as rivals like Volkswagen and Renault also face scrutiny over their own complex brand structures. For now, the company appears set on proving that its multi-brand approach can deliver results in an increasingly electrified market.
