Smart #2 Opens Pre-Orders in Europe With a Sub-€20,000 Starting Price

Smart has begun taking pre-orders for its new #2 city car across several European markets, giving buyers an early shot at the two-seat EV ahead of its full sales launch. The brand opened reservations on 13 October in key countries including Germany, France and Italy, describing the move as a response to unusually strong early interest from its community. Customers who commit now should be able to get behind the wheel before the model reaches dealerships more broadly.

The #2 is a compact electric two-seater aimed squarely at urban drivers, reviving the spirit of the old Fortwo without simply repeating it. At roughly 2.79 metres long, it keeps the twin seats, twin doors and the wheels pushed far out to the corners that made its predecessor so recognisable, and it tops out at 140 km/h. A 60 kW motor sits on the rear axle, fed by a 35.7 kWh LFP pack using CATL cells, which Smart says is good for 290 km on the WLTP cycle. It rides on a newly developed Electric Compact Architecture (ECA), which keeps kerb weight down to 1,140 kg and allows a 205 kg payload, with 305 litres of luggage space behind the seats. Dimensions come in at 2.75 x 1.76 x 1.56 metres on a 1.88-metre wheelbase.

Pricing spans four trim levels. The entry Pure starts at €19,990, the Pure+ at €20,990, the Premium at €24,490 and the Couture Edition at €25,690 — the last of which is capped at 999 units for Europe. These figures apply to the German market and may shift from country to country. The mechanical package is common across the range, but charging and equipment vary: the base Pure accepts only 7.4 kW AC, stretching a 10-to-80 per cent top-up to about five hours, while the other trims take 11 kW and complete the same task in roughly three. DC capability is identical throughout, with every #2 accepting up to 65 kW and, thanks to the modest battery, recovering from 10 to 80 per cent in under 20 minutes.

Equipment rises with the price. Even the Pure includes keyless entry, vehicle-to-load (V2L) charging and a suite of driver assistance systems. The Pure+ adds 11 kW AC charging, a heated driver’s seat and extra assistance features, while the Premium steps up to a fixed glass roof, artificial leather upholstery, a seven-speaker Sennheiser audio system and more colour choices. The Couture Edition is set apart by an Atelier White Matt finish with a Platinum Gold roof and 16-inch alloys, among other exclusive touches.

Smart will build the #2 in China at first, exporting it to Europe and beyond. The vehicle carries a three-year warranty, with the battery covered separately for eight years or 200,000 km, and is expected to hold at least 70 per cent of its state of health over that period. The e-commerce rollout proper is planned for the first half of 2027.
