Shell Pulls Back Hydrogen Refueling in California, Tightening an Already Sparse Network

Shell has decided to close several of its hydrogen refueling stations in California, dealing a blow to drivers of fuel-cell vehicles who already faced a limited number of places to fill up. The move reduces the state’s hydrogen station count further, making it harder for owners to plan longer trips.

The decision is part of a broader shift by Shell away from light-duty hydrogen retail. The company said it will redirect its hydrogen efforts toward heavy-duty trucking and industrial applications, where demand and infrastructure economics are seen as more viable.

For fuel-cell car owners, the closures mean fewer options and longer detours to reach a working pump. Hydrogen vehicles have long struggled with infrastructure, and this latest cutback underscores the challenge of scaling a refueling network when adoption remains low.

Shell’s retreat does not spell the end of hydrogen mobility, but it highlights how fragile the retail side remains. Until station counts and utilization improve, fuel-cell cars will continue to face an uphill battle against battery-electric alternatives.
