Rivian Posts Record Quarterly Deliveries as R2 SUV Gains Traction

Rivian closed out its strongest sales quarter to date, delivering 19,248 vehicles between July and September while producing 19,751 units. That delivery figure marks a roughly 45% jump compared with the same stretch a year earlier, and much of the momentum traces back to the R2, the company’s newly launched, more accessibly priced electric SUV.
The R2, which arrived in June, has now completed its first full quarter on the market. Rivian did not disclose how many of the quarter’s deliveries were R2 models, but the automaker has set an ambitious target of moving 20,000 to 25,000 R2 units by year’s end. Reaching that goal would place the R2 among the fastest-ramping EVs ever sold in the United States, trailing only Tesla’s Model Y. Rivian also intends to roll out lower-priced variants of the R2, with starting figures dipping to around $45,000.
Should those projections hold, Rivian expects total 2025 sales of 65,000 to 70,000 vehicles across its R1 lineup, the R2, and its commercial electric van, which would eclipse the roughly 50,000-unit plateau the company has hovered around in recent years. Full third-quarter financial results are slated for October 29.
Production of the R2 currently takes place at Rivian’s Normal, Illinois plant, which was recently expanded to handle the new model. A second facility is under construction near Atlanta, Georgia, designed to eventually build up to 300,000 vehicles annually with room for further growth. The R2’s success is critical to offsetting years of steep losses tied to the costly infrastructure behind the mass-market vehicle. Rivian has also struck a deal with Uber for robotaxi versions of the R2, and in March it delayed its 2027 profitability target to pour more capital into autonomous driving development.
