Rare 1976 Pontiac Grand Prix Golden Anniversary Edition Heads to Auction

Pontiac never made it to its 100th birthday, but the division did celebrate a half-century in 1976, and the Grand Prix was chosen to wear the party clothes. The result was the Golden Anniversary Edition, a commemorative trim said to have been built in fewer than 5,000 examples. One of those cars is now offered for sale out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with an opening bid of $15,000 still waiting for a taker.

Pontiac based the package on the LJ trim, then finished every car in Anniversary Gold Metallic. This example is described as largely original, though the seller suspects some paintwork may have been done over the years. It lives in a garage and only comes out for occasional car shows, and the body is reported to be straight and solid with plenty of shine left in the finish.

The Golden Anniversary package also brought Hurst Hatch T-Tops, a feature that suits buyers who like their luxury with a side of open-air attitude. Air conditioning was not part of the standard equipment list and had to be ordered as an extra, which this car’s original buyer did — though the compressor currently has no belt fitted. Inside, the cabin shows front bucket seats and a center console and is said to be in excellent shape.

Motivation comes from a 400-cubic-inch V8, rated at 170 horsepower or 185 when equipped with a four-barrel carburetor. The odometer reads 25,750 miles, but the title lists the mileage as exempt, so that figure cannot be verified. The car is presented as a two-owner vehicle, and interest from a potential third caretaker seems likely.
